Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which lies behind the iris and the pupil.

No one knows for sure why, but as we age the eye’s lens changes as we age.  The lens of your eye is mostly made of water and protein. The protein is arranged in a precise way that keeps the lens clear and lets light pass through it. But as we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens.

Cataracts generally affect people over the age of 60 and in some cases quite a few younger will suffer from cataracts.  Cataracts are so common it has been said that everyone will develop a cataract if they live long enough.

A cataract at first has little to no effects on your vision.  You may begin to notice that your vision is blurred a little, some people have described it as like looking through cloudy piece of glass or wax paper.

Cataracts can only be diagnosed by an eye care specialist.

Currently there is no medical treatment to reverse or prevent the development of cataracts.  Once they form, there is only one way to achieve clear vision again, and that is to physically remove the cataract from the eye.
