For many years most patients who underwent cataract surgery still needed to wear glasses to read. New technology now affords the patient several choices
of lens implants that reduce or eliminate the need for glasses after surgery.
Here is a brief description of the new lenses and how they perform:
Tecnis Multifocal Lens - Offers the best functional vision in all lighting environments. Only lens FDA approved to improve reaction time while driving.
Tecnis - this lens has been approved by the FDA for improved functional vision. Patient has the ability to see well even in low-light situations like driving at night, and improved vision for distance viewing. With the Tecnis lens you may still need to wear glasses for close-up tasks or reading.
ReSTOR - offers good distance vision, good close-up or reading vision, fair intermediate vision and 15-20% of people reported difficulty driving at night due to glare and halos.
Toric - The AcrySof ® Toric IOL provides quality distance vision leaving you without the need for glasses and contact lenses.
ReZoom – offers good distance vision and good vision when working on a computer, but only fair close-up vision and may produce glare and halos while driving at night.
Crystalens – offers good distance vision, good intermediate vision, but only fair close-up or reading vision.
The decision on what lens implant is best for you should be determined by you and your surgeon based on your expectations of your vision after surgery and your lifestyle.
