Amsler Grid

The Amsler Grid has been used since 1945 and is designed to monitor a person’s central visual field.  It is a diagnostic tool that helps to detect visual disturbances caused due to changes in the retina. Commonly used to detect or monitor Macular Degeneration. The Amsler Grid is used to test the central part of the retina, called the macula.

Instructions:

1 ) Click here to print the Amsler Grid
2)  Choose a bare wall or door in a well lit room, away from glare
3)  Tape the Grid with the center dot at your eye level
4)  Step away from the Grid at about 14 inches
5)  If you wear glasses or contacts use them to look at the grid
6)  Cover one eye, and look at the dot in the center of the grid

Ask yourself these 3 questions:

1.  Am I able to see the corners and sides of the square?

2.  Do I see wavy lines?

3.  Are there any holes or missing areas of the grid ?

Repeat the test, covering the opposite eye
