The written word is a powerful tool, here in southwest Florida the resources of the News-Press keeps our community informed and educated. Who would have thought a wrong turn would still be benefiting a community centuries later?
News-Press beginnings can be credited to bad navigation. In 1884, Capt. James Rowan was hired to deliver passenger Stafford Cleveland to a town in Central Florida. Rowan missed the turn and ended up dumping Cleveland on the shores of Fort Myers, printing presses and all. The result: the Fort Myers Press
was born in the tiny Gulf Coast community of 349 people.
